Ashtanga Yoga

The word Ashtanga is comprised of two Sanskrit words, “Ashta” and “Anga.” “Ashta” refers to the number eight, while “Anga” means limb or body part. Therefore, Ashtanga is the union of the eight limbs of yoga. These are:

Yamas- Ethical & Moral rules to be followed

Niyamas- Behaviors and observances that shall rule the individual’s private life

Asana – Physical postures that are steady and comfortable

Pranayama – Breathing exercises and techniques which are used

Pratyahara – Which means withdrawing one’s attention from external sensory objects and bringing awareness and attention within

Dharana – Which means concentration, the focus of one’s mind on one particular object, idea or state

Dhyana –  Which means contemplation, reflection, deep meditation

Samadhi – Which means putting together, joining, union, whole. During Samadhi, oneness with the object of meditation is achieved

It is a vigorous and dynamic style of hatha yoga characterized by its structured approach, consisting of six distinct series or levels of postures, each designed to build strength, flexibility, and stamina. The practice is heavily rooted in vinyasa, which refers to the fluid movements that connect each pose, creating a seamless flow that integrates movement with breath. This connection between breath (ujjayi pranayama) and movement is fundamental to Ashtanga, as you synchronize your breath with a specific series of movements, allowing for a meditative experience to enhance focus and concentration.
